The Public Seismic Network of Dominica (DPSN) is a group of amateur seismologists living on the Caribbean Island of Dominica. DPSN was formed in response to swarms of earthquakes of volcanic origin which began affecting the southern third of the island in September 1998. Several of these quakes caused serious damage to buildings. This reminded us, very forcibly, of the serious seismic dangers which lurk even on tranquil, beautiful islands like Dominica.
Like our friends in the Public Seismic Network, we wish to build up groups of well informed residents, who not only know how to respond to catastrophic earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, but who also actively support educational and hazard mitigation programs in this community. Knowing what to do when a quake strikes can really save lives. |
